Pre and Post-Operative Instructions

After the tooth extraction, your dentist will place gauze over the site to slow bleeding and form a blood clot. Soreness, swelling, and bruising are common for up to three days.

Recovery time varies, but most resume regular activities within 48-72 hours. Hard and crunchy foods should be avoided initially.

Soft foods such as rice, pasta, eggs, yogurt, and applesauce are recommended.

Do not drink through a straw to avoid dry sockets. Healing of the jawbone may take several weeks before dental implant replacement.

It is normal to experience soreness in the region for about 3-4 days after receiving a bone graft. However, most patients typically recover within four days following the procedure.

Depending on the complexity and size of the area where the bone graft was placed, the surgeon may prescribe medication for pain management after the surgery. In minor cases, over-the-counter pain relievers like Advil or Tylenol may suffice.

To aid in the stabilization and healing of the new graft, we recommend following a soft diet and avoiding sharp foods that could re-open or aggravate the surgical site (e.g., chips or nachos). Moreover, diligent oral hygiene is crucial to prevent infection, which could harm the grafted bone. Our team will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions and address any concerns you may have.

After undergoing impacted canine or tooth surgery, it is normal to experience limited bleeding from the surgical sites. Although you may feel soreness, most patients find that taking Advil or Tylenol for 2-3 days after the surgery is enough to manage the pain. Patients may also notice some swelling around the lips due to holding the mouth open during the procedure, for which we recommend using ice packs for a few hours (on and off) after surgery.

In terms of your diet, we suggest sticking to softer foods for the first two days, after which you can gradually introduce more regular meals, depending on your comfort level. Avoid sharp foods that may reopen or aggravate the surgical site, such as chips or nachos.

Within 7-14 days, we recommend that you see your orthodontist to activate the eruption process by applying the proper rubber band to the chain on your tooth. If you experience any complications after the surgery, you can contact your surgeon at the office during office hours, or they can be paged after hours.
